The foundation: subconscious conditioning brought to the surface expands consciousness.
Ayahuasca is becoming more and more well-known and popular, maybe you have already seen a film or documentary about this subject or read a book about it. If you have already heard about the so-called Rainforest Treasure tea, but you do not know what it is and what you’re dealing with exactly, you are at the right place. In the following we have collected basic information about Ayahuasca for you. In this way, you can inform yourself about it easily without having to sift through literature about ingredients, ceremonies and effects for hours. Many people think that Ayahuasca is a south american psychoactive plant. But that is not quite correct.
Ayahuasca is a drink, or more precisely a medicine. During traditional ceremonies, this tea is being prepared by shamans and its ingredients make it possible for the participants to take a look into their own souls.
Feel the invigorating healing power of Ayahuasca in our unique Ayahuasca ceremonies. Recent studies prove that ayahuasca (yagé) can heal people with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mood disorders and addictions.

Ayahuasca has its origins in shamanic religions of the Amazonian peoples and other parts of South America. Countries where the drug is used for the creation of spiritual experiences are for example Brasil, Peru and Colombia.
Surviving traditions and the shamans’ century-old knowledge dictates the preparation of the drink, which is usually used in ceremonies. In the following, we will describe the exact ingredients of the drink and how it is used.
The drink’s basic ingredients are often the plants Chacruna and Caapi, but the recipe may vary according to individual traditions.
Chacruna, or psychotria viridis in Latin, is a plant growing in South America containing N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). DMT is a psychoactive tryptamine alkaloid. Normally the human body breaks this substance down quickly, but the addition of Caapi prevents this process. Caapi, banisteriopsis caapi in Latin, is a kind of liana containing MAO inhibitors. These Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are part of the harmala alkaloids which slow the decomposition of DMT. The aforementioned composition is merely a common example of the drink’s preparation, as it is made for instance by some shamans in Colombia. Other traditions, however, use seeds or roots of other plants.
During shamanic traditions Ayahuasca is consumed in ceremonies and rituals to open a gateway to the soul and to invoke spiritual experiences. The shamans prepare the drink according to tradition and support the participants in their often quite intense experiences. The consumption can be made in groups or in private, usually effects start showing after 30 to 90 minutes. Since the experiences can be very intense, participants should prepare thoroughly for the ceremony.
If possible, the body should be detoxified beforehand, but an actual diet or strict fasting is not necessary in most cases. Still, you should not eat anything about six hours before the ritual, but drink a lot of water. Drugs of any kind, including nicotine and alcohol, are taboo, as well as psychotherapeutic drugs (antidepressants) and other medicine should not be taken. If taking your medicine is strictly necessary, consult your shaman before the ceremony!
The consumption of Ayahuasca sometimes enables the participants to have profound spiritual experiences. Effects usually start being noticeable after 30 to 90 minutes and can last several hours. A higher dosage by drinking multiple cups can prolong the effects. Ayahuasca can help you expand your consciousness and open the door to your subconscious. In this way, participants can confront their own self and get to know themselves thoroughly. Oftentimes this is a very upsetting and emotional process, because people are able to see their own real personality, separated from any kind of conditioning, expectations and oppressions imposed on them from the outside.
These factors can thus be identified, examined and, if necessary, discarded. So-called shadow aspects and suppressed traumas become visible and treatable. Thus, the ceremony also helps with depression and stress, since suppressed emotions like anger and sadness can be liberated and emotional scars as well as anxiety disorders can finally be healed.
The consumption of Ayahuasca can also lead to side effects, however. Very frequent are nausea and vomiting, further observable side effects are sweating and trembling. Among other things, this is the reason why the consumption should only be made under surveillance and under the guidance of experienced shamans and never alone on your own! While the usage of Ayahuasca is legal in many South American countries, in Germany it is not. The reasons are the above-mentioned ingredients Caapi and Chacruna. DMT, which is found in Chacruna, is subject to the Betäubungsmittelgesetz, the Narcotics Law in Germany, and thus is not tradeable in the country. Therefore you are not able to simply purchase Ayahuasca. Internationally, it is different, as for example in the United States: In the USA, Ayahuasca is legal in a religious context.
The described legal situation forbids the holding of Ayahuasca ceremonies in Germany, but apart from that we also urgently advise against doing it in Germany, or even spontaneously and alone!
The effects of Ayahuasca can, as mentioned above, be very intense and profound. Thus, the tea should only be consumed under surveillance and in the company of a professional. Furthermore, deliberate preparation as well as thorough post processing are essential. Because of this, in the last few years the chance of going on a Ayahuasca Retreat has become more and more sought after. There, those interested can experience the ceremony after careful preparations in a secure space directly in those countries, where the tradition has its roots.
At Ayahuasca Colombia we are working with experienced and responsible Colombian shamans and we would love to make this special experience come true for you as well. In this way, you can escape your daily routine by spending a relaxing holiday in South America while at the same time having unique experiences, discovering your own self and further developing your personality.
